The Suffolk village of Buxhall lies close to Stowmarket and once organised its own race meeting in the middle of the 19th century on behalf of the 16th Queen’s Lancers Regiment. The village is picturesque, having had a windmill since at least 1783. Throughout its history it has had three mills, the first being a post mill which was destroyed by fire in 1814. The only recorded race meeting in the village took place on Wednesday 5th April 1865 and was well attended by the 16th Queen’s Lancers, their families and supporters. The opening race was the Regimental Challenge Cup over 3 miles which saw Corkscrew fend off the challenge of Quicksilver. Despite the obvious success of the meeting, there are no records of future meetings taking place. |
